    I'm always startled by seeing Dimaggio's low strikeout rates put into context. Only 5 Ks in his 56 game streak - wow. That is what keeps streaks alive, because (obviously) you can't get a hit if you don't put the ball in play.

    Conversely, at 20 Ks in 28 games, Ethier will be challenged to keep his streak going. But, I certainly wish him well in doing so as long as he can.

    In the rest of 2003, Paul Lo Duca hit .240 with 3 HRS and SLG and OBP right around .300, OPS of about .620.

    I see that Steve Garvey (like Dimaggio) had two 20+ game hit streaks in the same season. But, that's where the similarity ends.

    And, look at Jackie Robinson's streak in his first season - talk about handling pressure, abuse, media glare and everything else. That's impressive.

    The thing that still drives me crazy about '41 is that Ted Williams actually outperformed DiMaggio not only over the course of the season, but also over the course of the streak. He hit for a higher average, got on-base more, and had a bigger OPS. One of the more amusing tidbits from that historic season.

    Another tidbit... in game 57 of DiMag's streak he was robbed twice by Ken Keltner. He then started a 16-game streak the next game. If either of keltner's plays weren't made he would have had a 73-game hitting streak!

    streak in the PCL during the 1933 season.

    The first thing that jumped out to me about Ethier's streak is his K's and walks. His BABIP is an extraordinary and unsustainable .464 right now. Joe DiMaggio had a BABIP at around .374 during his streak. I wish him the best of luck, but with how much he is striking out, it will be a challenge. All the more impressive, though, if he continues over 30!

    How about that 23-game streak by Brett Butler?
    -- 35 hits ... all singles.
    -- 20 walks, giving him a .495 OBP.

    Butler led the 1991 NL in walks (108) and runs (112); led in times on base by a large margin; was 2nd to Bonds with a .401 OBP; and was 8th in oWAR despite just 20 extra-base hits.

    And DiMaggio had a long streak in the minors, too. He must have been a hitting machine. The low strikeout totals every year means he was always putting the ball in play.

    That season, Joe D also had a 41-game stretch without a strikeout (June 10 - July 25). Simply amazing.
