Biographical Information[edit]

Chuck Cottier was primarily a second baseman in nine seasons in the majors. He later managed the Seattle Mariners for parts of three seasons.

He was signed by the Baltimore Orioles in 1954 and sent to the Georgia-Florida League, followed by New Iberia in the Evangeline League in 1955. In 1956, he was peddled to the Milwaukee Braves. He came up in 1959 for 10 games, going 3-for-24 (.125) with a double and an RBI. The next year, he became the regular second baseman when Red Schoendienst struggled with tuberculosis. Cottier hit .227 with 11 extra base hits in 95 games. In the offseason, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers, and then traded again in June 1961 to the Washington Senators. He appeared in only 10 games with Detroit; in Washington he played 101 times, hitting .235 combined. In 1962, he had his strongest season, hitting .242 with 6 triples, 6 home runs, 14 steals, 50 runs scored and 44 walks, all career highs. In 1963, he dropped to .205, and became a backup in 1964, hitting .168. He briefly appeared in 1965, getting one at-bat, then did brief work in 1968 and 1969 with the California Angels.

After his playing days, Cottier was a minor league manager and a New York Mets coach from 1979 to 1981. He joined the Seattle Mariners staff in 1982 and, in 1984, replaced Del Crandall as the team's skipper. After posting a 98-119 mark in about two years at the helm, he was fired and became a Chicago Cubs coach from 1988 to 1994. He spent the next season, 1995, on the Orioles staff and then was a Philadelphia Phillies coach from 1997 to 2000.
