Pat McMahon was drafted by the New York Mets out of high school, but opted to play college baseball instead. He played for Stetson in 1974-1975.
McMahon became an assistant coach at Stetson in 1976. He was head coach of Bishop Kenny High School in 1977-1980. McMahon was an assistant at Mississippi State University (1980-1981), Old Dominion University (1981-1982), and MSU again (1983-1989). He was then head coach at Old Dominion from 1990 to 1994. He returned to Mississippi State yet again as associate head coach from 1995-1997 and head coach from 1998 to 2001. McMahon was been head coach at the University of Florida from 2002 to 2007. In 2008, he was named manager of the Staten Island Yankees.
