In 2002, the Louisville RiverBats, the Cincinnati Reds affiliate in the International League, shortened their name to the Louisville Bats. Prior to being known as the RiverBats, the team was called the Louisville Redbirds for more than a decade after their arrival from Springfield, Illinois in 1982.

The Louisville hitting coach has been Adrian Garrett since 2002.
