Baton Rouge is the state capital of Louisiana, located on the Mississippi River in the southern part of the state. It is 80 miles north-west of New Orleans, LA and home to Louisiana State University and to Southern University and A&M College. The name Baton Rouge means "red stick" in French and refers to the Indian nation which inhabited the area when the French settled Louisiana in the 18th Century.
